The B. Young Concert Series: First Concert on Monday, April 20, 2009, at Kapi’olani Community College

In honor of the very generous man who was the 2008 primary donor for our Petrof grand piano at Kapi’olani Community College, I am initiating a concert series named after him: the B. Young Concert Series.  These concerts will highlight the quality of our music program at KCC, feature guest performers, develop music appreciation at our college, and serve as fundraisers for our music discipline.

KCC Synthesizer Ensemble Performs at Spring 2009 International Festival

On March 17, 2009, my KCC Synthesizer Ensemble performed a one-hour concert of Japanese and Korean music as part of Kapi’olani Community College’s week-long International Festival events.  This took place in the Ohi’a cafeteria, and included synthesizers, piano, flute, percussion, and vocals.  My student from Siberia, Larisa Mortz, was a guest performer at this concert, sharing her chamus (instrument from the Saha republic, which sounds like a bird) with the audience.  My students enjoyed sharing their music with fellow students, faculty and staff, and the community in this unique cultural event.

Handbells and Synthesizer Ensemble Holiday Concert

On Wednesday, November 28, 2007, the UCC–Judd St. Handbell Ringers and the Kapi’olani Community College Synthesizer Ensemble will be performing Christmas music in concert together at Kahala Mall Centerstage from 8:00-8:45pm.  This concert will be a new venture for me, as I have previously directed these ensembles in their separate holiday concerts, but have never combined both groups fully until now.  I am really looking forward to the new challenges that this event will bring, as well as the chance to simultaneously showcase the church and college ensembles while sharing our love of music with others.

Each group will be performing fifteen minutes of their own selections, but the high point of the concert is the twenty-minute combination of rich sound that results from combining these special groups together.  The instrumentation includes five octaves of handbells, six keyboards and an acoustic Steinway concert grand piano, three flutes, light percussion, and two soprano soloists.  There will also be gospel hula and sign language to accompany ”Silent Night”.  I will be accompanying both ensembles on piano for some of the selections, as well as performing a flute descant on “God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen”.

Announcement: UCC Judd Street “Midsummer Night’s Dream” Music Concert

There will be a summer music concert in the sanctuary at United Church of Christ on Sunday, July 15, 2007, at 6:30pm.  The church is located in the Nuuanu/Pali area of Honolulu at 467 N. Judd St.  This is a free concert open to the public, and will showcase the variety of music ensembles that we have at our church, as well as solos, duos, and trios.  The program, which ranges from popular to sacred music, will last approximately two hours, and is a variety show featuring vocal, piano, flute, guitar, and handbell selections, as well as hula and sign language.

I will be directing the Angels of Faith (youth girls vocal ensemble), the Choraliers (children’s choir), the Flute Trio, the Handbell Choir, the Praise Team, and the recently-formed Youth Keyboard Ensemble.  Other groups performing as well include Alternity, the Chapel Choir, and the Guitar Ensemble.
